Overview
What is Simon Smart ?
Simon Smart is an intuitive and user-friendly smart home application that has been developed to facilitate relaxed and enjoyable home automation experiences. The design consistency between its digital interfaces and the traditional physical way of operation aims to significantly shorten the users’ learning curve. Preconfigured and also customisable scenes based on the daily routine of users are presented in animated illustrations. A simple layout and well-thought-out interactive components further boost a sense of intimacy and joyfulness.
My role
Product Design Intern
During this four-month project, I redesigned Simon Smart's main interface to prioritize scene-based automation over individual device controls. Working with PMs, engineers, and researchers, I transformed the app from a device-focused tool into a scenario-driven experience. The new design features prominent scene cards, streamlined device management, and improved user flows that make home automation more intuitive for everyday use.
The Outcome
The Scene-First Interface. Scene-based controls allow users to manage multiple devices simultaneously through preset automation sequences like Rise, Leave, Return, and Sleep. Over four months, I was the lead designer on this transformation, where I designed a more intuitive, scenario-driven interface that accommodates both automated lifestyle routines and detailed device customization.
Problem Framing
The problem and vision. Simon Smart previously operated with a device-first approach, requiring users to manually control each smart device individually. This created friction in daily routines where users needed to adjust multiple devices for common scenarios.
